Raiders Launch New Elite Girls’ Basketball Academy at Notre Dame

The Plymouth University Raiders have announced an exciting partnership with Notre Dame School in Plymouth, to bring girls’ and women’s basketball back to the city. Notre Dame are to be the hosts of a new venture for the Raiders – an elite girls’ basketball academy for Under 19s.

Festive Mission

A stripped down travelling version of the school’s Harmony Choir has been busy spreading a little Christmas cheer. The group visited Nazareth House and Manor House Nursing Home to entertain the residents with a selection of festive songs and carols.

New Rooms!

Five new classrooms have been officially opened at Notre Dame by Sister Edith Brash.

The new suite of rooms are home to Geography and Modern Foreign Languages. They have been built on top of the existing Stang Building, named after Sister Dorothy Stang, a member of the Sisters of Notre Dame who founded the school and who fought and died for environmental rights.

Mrs White, Headteacher, said,

‘The new rooms were much needed. They replace some rather old and tired mobile classrooms and provide the light and modern environment our students deserve’.

The offical opening was held ahead of the school’s annual Awards Evening.

Awards Galore

Notre Dame’s annual Awards Evening was a glorious celebration of the school year which saw over 100 individuals recognised and rewarded for their work and contribution to school life.

Amongst the awards were the House ‘Head, Heart, Hands’ awards, subject commendations, school presentations and the Sisters of Notre Dame Awards, given annually in recognition of the founders of the school.

The event was hosted by the Senior Student Team and included music from the school’s Harmony Choir and catering by the school’s own GCSE Catering students. There were presentations from each House as well as speeches from Mrs White, the Headteacher, and the special guests for the evening, former students Alice Golding-Cook and Natasha Wise. They spoke powerfully of the part the school played in supporting their aspirations and the very real place Notre Dame has in their hearts.

Science Student Heads To National Finals…

Notre Dame student scientist Amy Gumbrell has been selected as a finalist for the National Science and Engineering Competition.

The A Level student entered a biochemistry project, which was selected as one of the best science and engineering projects in the UK. She will attend the finals at The Big Bang: UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair, which runs from 13-14 March 2014 at The NEC, Birmingham.

The competition is run by the British Science Association. It is designed to recognise and reward young people’s achievements in all areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and by doing so, encourage others to engage with STEM and consider STEM-related career paths.

Amy said,

‘I’m really surprised but delighted. I have been told that the standard of entries was very high so I’m nervous about the finals – but excited too’.

Amy’s science teacher, Fran Fuller, said,

‘We are really proud of Amy’s achievement. It is a credit to her hard work and aspirations for the future. We can’t wait to cheer her on in March’.

Facing It!

Notre Dame Plymouth staff and students marked dia de los muertos by painting their faces and taking part in cultural events on Monday.

The Day of the Dead is celebrated in late October / early November in Mexico and is a time of celebration and for remembering those who have passed on. Mexicans believe that death is part of life and that, by living alongside it, it takes the fear out of it.

Students enjoyed film, music and artwork and next year we hope to bake some ‘pan de muertos’ too!
