LEARNING SUPPORT ASSISTANT APPRENTICESHIPS – October 2017 start

Fixed-Term Contract for one year

27.08 hours per week, 42 weeks per year (term time only, plus four weeks)

Apprentice Pay £3.50 per hour, optional contributory LGPS career average pension scheme

We are looking to appoint Learning Support Apprentices to join our SEND department.

The post will involve working with students who have special educational or medical needs and supporting them to access learning under the instruction of teaching/senior staff and SENDCO.

Our Apprentice Learning Support Assistants will attend The Skills Group for off-the-job training leading to either level II or level III qualification.  Candidates should demonstrate an interest and aptitude for working with young people with special educational needs within their application and at interview.

The post-holder will embody Notre Dame’s five Rs; resilience, resourcefulness, responsibility, reasoning, and reflection.  You will need to demonstrate good communication, inter-personal and organisational skills, and be a team player.  No two days will be the same, so the job is varied and interesting.

Alongside on-the-job training, the successful candidate will study for a Level 2 or Level III qualification delivered by The Skills Group at their premises in Plymouth City Centre.  Entry requirements for the course are Maths and English GCSE at grade C/4, or above and applicants may need to complete functional skills tests at college.

You will be paid monthly in arrears and you will be eligible to join the LGPS career average pension scheme.  Please see below for the job description and person specification for this role.

BEHAVIOUR MENTOR/COVER SUPERVISOR - October 2017 start

We are looking to appoint a Behaviour Mentor/Cover Supervisor to join our pastoral team. The role of the Behaviour Mentor is to work with school staff and other agencies to provide support to children who need help overcoming barriers to learning and/or where behaviour and attendance issues are a cause for concern.

The Behaviour Mentor will need to be able to carry out and lead effective sessions. Sessions will be prepared, but the successful candidate should also be able to work on their own initiative where necessary. The intention is to bring about sustained change with individual students, to improve their behaviour, attendance and raise their aspirations when their behaviour has disrupted classroom lessons.

The Behaviour Mentor will receive referrals from Heads of Houses and will address the needs of children who require assistance in overcoming barriers to learning in order to achieve their full potential, or to access the curriculum. When there are no referrals, this role will revert to general Cover Supervision.

The Behaviour Mentor will work with a range of students, including children with special or medical needs, challenging behaviour and children with EHCPs. They will be predominantly education based, but will have a wider remit including working with families and the wider community. They will work with children on a one-to-one basis or in small or large groups, so the successful candidate will need to demonstrate the following skills and attributes Listener; Facilitator for learning; Encourager; Motivator; Role model; Tenacious; Resilient. You must be a calm and assertive person with high levels of emotional resilience.
